Chinese chews

 2oz SR flour
 4oz plain flour 
one cup chopped dates 
half cup chopped walnuts (or pecans) 
1 cup sugar 
1 egg pinch salt 
1 tabsp milk 
1 teasp vanilla essence 
4 oz butter 
Sift flour and salt, add dates, nuts and sugar. Beat egg, add milk and melted butter then stir into flour mixture. Spread in a greased swiss roll tin and bake in a moderate oven 350°F (180°C)for 40 minutes. Cut into fingers while still hot and leave in tin to cool.
