Basketball star Matthew Dellavedova has capped a sensational basketball season with the Cleveland Cavaliers by being named the Bendigo Weekly Prime 7 backed Sports Star of the Month for June.

Maryborough born Dellavedova is a former Bendigo Braves player who during the American NBA season helped propel the Cavs into the finals of the world’s most elite basketball competition where he again starred, despite being part of a team that eventually lost the series to the highly fancied Golden State Warriors.

The unassuming Dellavedova’s tenacity and intense competitive nature on court earned him the respect and support of basketball legends including the game’s highest profile player – LeBron James and fellow NBA great Charles Barkley.

He scored an inspirational playoff career-high 20 points, to help the Cavs take the pivotal third game of the NBA final series before the Golden State regrouped to take the series.

His never say die attitude and willingness to put himself on the line against much bigger and more fancied opponents won the respect and admiration of sporting fans across the globe.

A former captain of the Australian Under 19 team, the London Olympian was also a key ingredient in the Cavs’ push to the NBA finals.

In recognition of Dellavedova’s breakout season, the Cavaliers re-signed the Australian guard in July this year.

Dellavedova played in 67 games (13 starts) in the 2014-15 regular season, averaging 4.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 20.6 minutes per game. He shot a career-high .407 from the three-point line and .763 from the free-throw line. He also led the Cavaliers with a 3.34 assist-to-turnover ratio for the season, which ranked fourth in the NBA.

Dellavedova appeared in all 20 games (seven starts) during Cleveland’s NBA Finals run in the 2015 playoffs and averaged 7.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 24.9 minutes per game.
