ROUND Two of the Café Roubaix Summer Series drew a large crowd and large fields in three grades of excellent criterium

racing on the Mayfair Park circuit last weekend.

The Ronde Socks C Grade field was away at 8:80 for a 20 minutes-plus three-laps challenge in which Mat Runnalls showed he had learned a lot from last week’s third place, winning easily ahead of Tom Floyd and Michael Smyth.

A huge Hume & Iser B Grade field of 28 riders then took to the circuit for their 30 minutes-plus three-laps race, with Nick Gates holding off the wily Ash Harding and then Oscar Stephenson.

Then it was the turn of the big guns, with 22 Symes Motors A Grade riders setting out to offer the large crowd a spectacle few would have imagined.

Darren Lapthorne showed he was eager to go one better after last week’s thrilling finish, but David Pell, Shaun McCarthy and Jeremy McInnes were not going to let his have it all his own way.

The awesome foursome lapped the field with three laps remaining, before Porsche Drapac’s Lapthorne went on to win ahead of McInnes and then the ever-consistent Pell.

Racing continues this Sunday morning at Mayfair Park.
