Storm rolls into grand final debut

HUSTLE: Strath Storm defender Kate Burton.

Another year, another first for the Strathfieldsaye Storm.

Most of the club’s history-making achievements in its short lifespan have come on the football field, but in 2015 the club’s netball program took a quantum leap forward.

The club’s A-grade side will compete in its first grand final on Saturday and the Storm will also have its B-grade and
B-reserve sides in grand final action.

As the netball catches up to the remarkable success the Storm has had on the football field the past two years, Storm A-grade coach Maleta Roberts said there is a great atmosphere among the club’s netball ranks.

“All the grades have worked really hard this year,” she said.

“Last year we said it was an introduction kind of year – with so many new coaches on board – setting standards and expectations among the group but this year was always going to be ‘business’.

“I think it demonstrates the depth of players we have across the grades which is always healthy for a club.”

The Storm’s strength comes in its defence and midcourt, with the likes of defenders Fiona Themann and Kate Burton and Brianna Dalrymple-Monro having a huge impact in the team’s strong second half of the season.

“Our strengths are speed, quick hands and feet throughout the court, one on one defence and the numbers and versatility of players to play various positions,”
Roberts said.

“(Golden Square) are a well-respected and well-meshed team.

“I think we have definitely strengthened our weaker areas to combat that.

“We have decreased our losing margin each time we have played them... so obviously something is working.”

Despite the relative inexperience in finals of her side compared to that of Square, Roberts is confident her side can topple the 2015 competition powerhouse, and said that defence will be key.

“A defensive game generally wins games so we will need to have 7 attackers and 7 defenders every minute of every quarter,” she said.

“It is an awesome achievement to get this far. Anything extra is just a bonus.”
